Brainwaves and Meditation

Your brain is an evolutionary miracle composed of millions and millions of nerve cells, all of which communicate by emitting minute electrical impulses. These electrical impulses can be measured. By placing electrodes on the scalp the resultant activity can be monitored as oscillations - brainwaves. These brainwaves are categorised into four groups depending on their bands of frequency and are measured in Htz or oscillations per second. The four groups are Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.

As you start your meditative practice you gradually work your way from
beta oscillation to alpha and then into theta. If you end up in delta you will be asleep.

Beta waves (15-30 (Hz)). This is the brain activity of the normal wakeful state. It is associated with conscious thought, problem solving and the outer-physical world. You are probably in the "beta state" at the moment.

Alpha waves (9-14 Hz). As you start to meditate and become relaxed, your brain activity slows from the fast oscillations of beta into the calmer waves of alpha. Here you’ll experience a wonderful sense of peace and well-being as anxieties just melt away. You may feel a sort of inner smile and a flow of creative ideas drift into your awareness from your subconscious mind. This is where meditation begins and is the gateway to deeper states of consciousness.

Theta waves
(4-8 Hz). As your mediation goes deeper you enter into the realm of the theta wavebands. Brain activity slows right down and it is here that you enter the state of consciousness that most people only ever experience fleetingly as they drift into sleep or on waking. This is a truly wonderful place to be. You may feel; a floating sensation as if you are slightly rising out of your body, see light shows flashing and glowing inside the front of your head and your inner world becomes as real our your outer world. Old and distant memories may surface, you may experience flashes of inspiration and you’ll gain access to intuitive messages from both your subconscious mind and group conscious.

Delta waves (1-3 Hz). This is the brainwave activity of sleep. As you enter into the slower wave bands deep rest takes place both on a physical and mental level. The body’s biological processes slow down. Cleansing and detoxification takes place and the body enters into a natural state of gentle healing.
